You have the right:
to expect that
pharmaceutical drugs have been thoroughly studied,
tested and that safe dosage amounts have been
determined;
to know that prescription
drugs are accurately labeled and proper warnings are
displayed;
to feel confident that
manufacturers are truthfully marketing their products
and informing the public of associated side effects;
to know that prescription
drugs are being prescribed for the proper medical
conditions;
to expect that drug
manufacturers are responsibly marketing their products
to the medical community;
Nationwide, there are an estimated 6
million women taking the prescription drug Prempro.
When first introduced, it was believed that HRT could
reduce the risk of osteoporosis and heart complications
in women. However, data suggests that after only one
year on Prempro, an otherwise healthy woman faced
increased risk of:
- Heart attack (by 29%)
- Breast cancer (by 24%)
- Blood clots (by 200%)
- Stroke (by 41%)
The National Cancer Institute also reported
a study that ovarian cancer risk in postmenopausal women
increased to 220% if they took estrogen for more than 20
years.
For almost 40 years, women have been encouraged to
take drugs like Prempro to relieve menopausal symptoms –
yet these drugs were recommended on unreliable medical
evidence. Wyeth pharmaceutical company, who is the
manufacturer of Prempro, has no plans to recall the
drug. Prempro bring almost $1.4 billion in revenue to
Wyeth’s coffer each year.
We believe that drug companies who place profit above
people must be held accountable for their negligence and
the damage they cause to innocent victim’s lives.
In response to the Prempro controversy, Wyeth has issued
new guidelines that caution against long-term use and
has reduced the drug’s recommended dosage by half.
Unfortunately, it may be too little too late for the
many women who have suffered adverse effects. Unsafe
prescription drugs have been marketed without
comprehensive testing or have inadequate warning labels.
If you, or someone you know, has been treated using
estrogen or a combination of estrogen/progestin hormone
replacement therapy, we suggest contacting your doctor
immediately to discuss whether HRT is the best course of
treatment.
